Haul Haul

My little haul today has me seeing double! I didn't do this intentionally, but that's what happens when you go to the drug store in full zombie headache mode. I went in for Excedrine on my way home from work. I remembered I needed makeup wipes, because I've been using my little eye wipes for my whole face since I ran out of the regular ones. I go through them so fast, that I decided to buy two packs. Then I remembered I was out of my Organix deep conditioner. It was on super clearance...so I got two of those, too! I also picked up a pack of Almay makeup eraser sticks (sounded cool), and a lippie recommended by Laurie over at The Makeup Squid.

In case you're wondering...I did remember the Excedrine, I just didn't include it in the picture. We have a love/hate relationship.

Hello lovelies...I'm working on a few posts in my head! In the meantime, please enjoy my latest mani. I went with matte teal this time. I picked out a teal gel with a hint of glitter. I applied my own matte topcoat (Essie) at home. I love matte over gel because you can easily wipe it clean with polish remover and go back to a nice shiny nail. Or re-apply the matte coat when it starts to chip. The gel underneath stays in tact! I chose a glitter polish because it gives more of a satin look instead of flat matte. And here it is:

First Impression: Melt Cosmetics Summer

Guys...! I did it again. I know I said I wasn't planning on another Melt lipstick until sometime next spring. But they hit me with free shipping, and I couldn't resist. One of my complaints with them was that not only are their lipsticks pricey, but their shipping is high too. So they reeled me in! I wanted Summer anyway, so I went ahead and got it.

One of the things I need to remember with my life is that I'm not a pale girl. I have a bit of a natural tan. I don't try to tan, but I'm the kind of person that can step outside for ten minutes with SPF 1000 and still pick up some color. I try my hardest not to tan my face, because I don't want to be an old leathery person, but I do wear a foundation a little darker than my face to blend in better with my skin. What does that have to do with reviewing this lipstick, you ask? WELL...all the swatches I've seen of this lipstick were apparently on people with a much different skin tone than mine. It's hard to judge through photos, because even on my own Instagram feed...my skin sometimes looks very light, and other times it looks quite a bit darker than it is. So this lipstick is not THE most flattering on me. But I did find that I could make it work using Viva Glam 5 lip gloss on top. So I'm glad I could make it work, but I wish I could wear it as the gorgeous matte it was meant to be. * sigh *

Anyway, here are some swatches. As you can see...Summer is a mixture of Mac's Sounds Like Noise and Lime Crime's Babette:

Left: Melt Summer
Right: Lime Crime Babbette
Center: Top: MAC Sounds Like Noise/Bottom: SLN w/ Babette on top

The Pros:
  • Great Melt smell...I love it
  • Pretty shade, perhaps better suited to lighter skin tones than my own.
  • Fast/free shipping.
  • Nice formula. This is an ULTRA MATTE lipstick. It's not gonna glide on and feel super creamy. However, for a matte, it does feel pretty nice.

The Cons:
  • Pricey, even with free shipping.
  • Not great on its own for my coloring.

The Verdict:
I will definitely use this lipstick. I'm just sad that I'm not gonna be able to wear it on its own. I would love to wear it in all it's matte delicious glory. So I'm borderline sad. But still a great buy and I would definitely recommend giving it a shot.

Ipsy Glam Bag: November 2013

Guys! OMG. I'm a little late to the party on posting this. I received my bag and took the photos on Thursday (?), and even had most of this post written that night. But as I mentioned before...this week has been an adventure. Yesterday, I planned to do some catching up around here, but I received a cooking class from my boss last minute, and then I had a little date night with my husband! So yesterday was spent running around and getting ready for those two events. Thanks for being patient with me! I try to post and reply to comments regularly, so I feel bad. Sometimes, life just has a different plan than I do!

After previously having a bad Ipsy experience involving white nail polish and gardenia perfume, I cancelled my subscription. However, I've seen so many good bags after I cancelled. They reeled me back in! This is my first bag since re-subscribing and I'm pretty happy with it!

What I got:
  • Nailtini Polish in Caviar Cocktail
  • Em Lipstick in Cabana Beige
  • Bombshell Lip Crayon in Hot Damn
  • BH Cosmetics Galaxy Chic Eyeshadow in Eclipse
  • Pixi Bronzer in Subtly Suntouched
  • Starlooks Gem Pencil Liner in Amethyst

What I'm most excited about is that red lip crayon, and I love this shade of nail polish.  I'm super into finding the perfect nude lip lately...I did a quick swatch of the Em one on my hand. It's very sheer...so it looks like my search is sadly not over. The shade does look pretty, and I'm sure I'll wear it, but it will have to be paired with something.

The biggest disappointment is that my bronzer is completely shattered. I emailed them to request a replacement, and they've already replied telling me they'll send a replacement within the next couple weeks. Also, I'm wary of BH Cosmetics, and recently boycotted them, so I'm not super thrilled of the eyeshadow, but I'm sure if I use it soon, I'll get some good use out of it before it stops working.  I quick-swatches this on my finger, and it's kind-of a grayish purple? So it might be good for a touch of color on a smokey eye.

The bag itself is a little gold scaly number. I've decided to keep my Ipsy bags aside and fill them with little mini gifts for when I need to have a gift handy. This gold one is something I would give to my mom. It's not entirely unfortunate, I just don't need it, and I don't like having extra things.

If you all would like more in-depth reviews on any of the products, please let me know and I'll be happy to do one! Weeks like last week are rare for me, so I won't get this behind on blogging again for a while! (I hope!) Also, if you would like to see the real value of this month's bag, please visit +Shalunya TheChronicBeauty . She gives a monthly breakdown on the value of each month's items, which I love! Plus, you should be visiting her blog anyway...she's a gem!

Side note...I mentioned that cooking class at the start of the post. It was a cheesecake class! I was so excited because I love cooking and baking, but I've never attempted cheesecake. I was always told it was so hard to do, so I always just left it to the experts. But now that I've done it, I realize it wasn't anything to be scared of! I'm so happy I got to take the class at my local Le Cordon Bleu. Here are some pics:

First Impression: Ojon Color Sustain

Some of you may recognize this from my latest "What's in my mail box?" post. Let me just tell you...I'm on my way out with my hubby. Literally in the car on our way to our destination. And I felt this post was urgent.

Oh my sweet baby Jesus, I've never smelled anything like this in my life. My head is swimming and my stomach is flopping around inside me like a dying fish. Please do yourself a favor and NEVER try this at home.

What's In My Mail Box?

I love online shopping. I have a borderline problem, to be honest. I especially like online shopping from Sephora. And here's why...First, I get more samples than in stores. Second, I get to keep things in my cart for months at a time, visit them every now and then, and eventually delete everything and buy something spontaneously. Third, I don't know if it's just the area I live in, but the sales people around here are excessively pushy...I can't walk down an aisle without being offered eight kinds of lipgloss.

Today, I received my most recent package. I purchased only one thing...Kat Von D Lock-It Powder Foundation. Everything else shown below is a sample. I didn't even redeem any points this time!

The samples I'm extra excited about are:

  • Urban Decay Anti-Aging Primer Potion: vintageortacky (YouTube) has been talking about this primer for a while, and I'm running out of my original formula. So this comes at the perfect time.
  • Benefit Stay Flawless: I really like the Benefit products I've tried, but when it comes to making purchases, I usually forget about Benefit. So I'm glad to try this out...hopefully it will go on my to-buy list!
  • Ojon Color Sustain Pro: I like that this is a pretty generous sample. It will be great to try now that my hair is going through winter torture.
  • Kat Von D lipstick in Celebutard: I'm into nude lips lately, and I've been dying to try KVD lippies. So this is killing two birds with one stone.
  • Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream: I have not tried any CC creams yet. Y'all know I'm hooked on my Tarte BB cream...so I'm curious to see how I like this one.
The things I'm not as excited about are:
  • Ren Hydra-Calm Cleansing Milk: I'll probably use this with my microderm brush. I know I've tried something else from this brand but I can't remember what. So we'll see how it goes!
  • Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer: I've tried this before and I like it, but I hate little sample packets. I'll probably keep it in my travel case in case I forget primer on vacation.
  • Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara: I'm not opposed to this, I just haven't heard anything about it. So I'm interested, just not hyped.
  • Lancome High Definition Mascara: Again...one I haven't heard much about. However, I'm running out of a couple of other trial-sized mascaras, so these two will make good replacements. I recently adopted a one in/one out program with my mascara drawer. It's that out of control.
  • Lancome Tresor Perfume: I know for a FACT that I did NOT request this sample, even though it came as one of my three freebies. I HATE HATE HATE this perfume. It gives me nightmares. My mom loves it, though, so it will go directly to her.
  • Dolce & Gabbana The One Perfume: I did request this one, but it's another one that I will give to my mom. I have it on right now, and I'm so happy that I'm about to jump in the shower to scrub any trace of it off. I'm already getting a headache, and I feel nauseous. I'm highly sensitive to smells...it's hard to find a perfume I enjoy, so I like to order these little samples because I've paid before for bottles where they smelled good in the store, but once I tried wearing it a couple of times...they made me sick. My mom and I like polar opposite scents, so I know the more I hate it, the more she'll love it. ;)
And that's it! Stay tuned, because my new Ipsy bag should arrive tomorrow! I signed up again after a few months of boycotting them. I didn't get many good products when I was subscribed before, but from what I've seen, they've gotten better lately! So I'm hoping the trend continues! I'll also be reviewing this KVD powder and foundation soon. I've been using the foundation for about a year, but this is my first time trying the powder. I can't wait to use them together tomorrow!  I feel like my face will be indestructible!!!

p.s. Sorry for the lack of posts lately. My hubby had the weekend off, so we got to hang out more than usual. And this week has been a little rough on me. I should be back on track now, so don't abandon me just yet ;)

The Empty: Maybelline Clean Express Makeup Remover Wipes

If you're new here, let me explain...I love "empties" videos/blog posts, but I don't like keeping empties around myself. So I just post products as I finish them. That way I get to talk about empties but still throw them out! Everybody wins!! :)

Today's empty is this pack of makeup remover wipes by Maybelline. Coincidentally, my last empty post was also makeup wipes. I go through a lot of these suckers!

I got these on a whim, at target. They were something like $6. I actually bought them because they come in a pink package. I'm a sucker for packaging. I ended up liking these quite a bit!

The Pros:

  • Nice texture.
  • I like the smell.
  • They work! Gets everything off.
  • Inexpensive.
  • They stay moist, even until the last wipe in the pack.

The Cons:

  • Some people may not like the smell. I happen to think it's great, but I can see why some would hate it.

The Verdict:
I will definitely be purchasing these again! It's been a long time since I found a makeup wipe that I LOVE. So I'm happy to have found these! I'm especially glad these worked out because I've been disappointed with some Maybelline products lately. So I was hesitant to try these, but I can't resist pink. I'm a nerd.

Sneak Peek: Naked 3

So...just when I thought I was no longer an Urban Decay fan...BAM!! They hit me with a new Naked palette!! I dropped off UD land when I bought the Glinda palette. The shadows were chalky and I really didn't care much for any of the shades. I still try to use it now and then but it made me question their "new formula." However, I do still get a lot of use out of the Naked 1 & 2 palettes and my Black palette. When I heard they were releasing a 3rd Naked, I was curious. When I saw the photos...I was almost convinced! I may have to venture back to UD territory when this comes out...reportedly in mid-December. Here is a little preview:

NOTD & First Impression: Kiss Gradation Nail Polish

I received this Kiss nail polish trio from Influenster, so I decided to try it out on my toes. I've never attempted ombré nails. So it doesn't look amazing, but you get the idea! One thing I should've done, you ask? Ummm...I probably should've read the instructions instead of throwing them away. OOPS! I only did the ombré on my big toes, because my other toes are too tiny to get that fancy. Anyway, here's my pedi:

The Pros:
  • Easy-ish ombré nails
  • Nice shades

The Cons:
  • Takes about 3 coats to get good coverage.
  • The glitter (step 3) was waaaaay goopy.

The Verdict:
I like the idea of ombré nails. However, I probably wouldn't repurchase. It's too much work to do on my own toes and those are the only nails I do myself. Plus it's cold and I'm not getting to show them off...so that sucks. I may use the first two (silver and dark grey) shades alone. So at least I'll get good use out of them. For someone that does their own nails and likes to try new things...this would probably be great. It's just not conducive to my life. Lol

Hey everyone...here is my latest mani. I've been slacking in choosing my next mani while I'm in between visits. So this was a spur of the moment decision, and I'm pretty happy with it!

And this is what it looks like when I'm trying to choose a color:

MAC Cosmetics: RiRi lipstick in Who's That Chick
Melt Cosmetics: lipstick in By Starlight

Forgot to Pack Something for Vacation?! Don't Panic...

I'm a terrible vacation packer. I make lists. I check twice. I still forget things. This weekend's excursion was no different. We headed to Cali to surprise my mom and sister-in-law for their birthdays. Here is what I forgot and how I dealt with it:

Ben Nye Banana Powder
I swear to baby Jesus, I grabbed this and put it in my bag. I don't know how, but it must have snuck out! I use this to set my highlight, but I planned to use it on my whole face because I had to be pale for my costume. Since I forgot it, I had to substitute my regular Mac Studio Fix powder. Not my first choice, since it was darker than the look I was going for, but I'd rather be tan than shiny.

Sleek Blush By 3 in Sugar
This was also going to be for my costume. I needed a red/orange blush. I accidentally grabbed my Nars duo in Sin/Casino instead...which is similar on size & shape. To cope, I mixed my bronzer with Daydreaming eye shadow by Mac. It actually worked out pretty well!

Luckily, that's all I forgot. And I was lucky to have decent substitutes in my stash. So next time you're on vacation and you find yourself missing a key beauty product, take it as an opportunity to shop your stash...don't panic!

Super simple face today! We're visiting family for the weekend. Having lunch with my parents and sibs, but we have to get in costume later. So I didn't want to spend forever on makeup that needs to come off soon.

Liner is Physicians Formula Eye Booster in ultra black. Lips are Mac RiRi Boy lipstick with NYX African Queen gloss. Makeup Forever aqua brow #25 on my brows. And Nars Sin/Casino on my cheeks. No eye shadow today! I should've used this look for the How Much is Your Face Worth tag!! Hehe
