Hello lovelies! I'm so excited to bring you this review! I ordered these lipsticks from nyxcosmetics.com, after trying and failing to find them at Ulta. I hear a lot of Ulta stores still don't have these in stock. My particular Ulta had never even heard of them and the girl told me to look for them in the aisle. Umm...no. They will be front and center on an end cap when and if you do get them. AND, they are not "the neutral ones," as she referred to them. But I digress. I'd seen several of these floating around Instagram over the past month or so, and the one that immediately caught my eye was Black Sesame. Now...these colors are not for everyone. Most of them are quite out-there. Some are more wearable than others. But I don't have anything like any of these lipsticks, and being that they're pretty inexpensive, I decided to get them from NYX versus other companies which would be three or more times the cost. Plus, with the coupon code: WELCOME25, I got 25% off. Not too shabby! The only one I didn't pick up was the white one. Duh. I started to get just Black Sesame and Chambord. And then...this is what happened in my head:
"And I really love the orange on everyone I've seen it on. Then I loved the pink. And the lavender was like nothing I have. Then I may as well get the darker purple. Then, I don't have mint! I'll get that. And the green is pretty. Well...If I'm getting the green, I might as well get the blue. Which blue? I don't know...I'll get both. I don't have a yellow. I don't really want it. But what if I need it again? Remember what happened with that J-Lo makeup look when everyone was doing yellow lips and I was the only one who didn't have a good yellow lipstick or anything I could use to make yellow lips?! What if that happens again? OMG I NEED THE YELLOW!"
And then I went on a no-buy.
And then I went on a no-buy.
Side note: I ordered them on a Saturday, and by the end of the day on Wednesday (by which I mean 11:20 at night), I still hadn't gotten a shipping notification. So I sent t hem an inquiry. The next day, I received a snippy email stating that my things had been sent out and that I needed to allow up to three full business days for orders to be shipped. Let's see:
Yup...that's three full days. So unless they were sent out after 11:20 p.m., I did wait three full business days. I didn't say anything, but I think they realized their mistake because even though my shipping notice said they would be here the following Thursday, they were expedited and arrived on Monday. So hooray for that.
ANYWAY...here are the swatches:
Top: Key Lime, Blue Velvet, Earl Grey, Citron, Orange Blossom
Bottom: Pistachio, Violet, Lavender, Rose, Black Sesame, Chambord
- Good range of colors. Even if you don't like the more "out there" shades, there is something for everyone.
- Most of them have good pigmentation.
- Affordable: For the price, you can afford to experiment.
- Not sure what went on with rolling these into stores. It seems like for as hyped and marketed as they were, they would've prepared for people actually wanting to go purchase them...?
- Some of them are very hard to work with, and apply very patchy.
- Rose, in particular, looks nothing on the lips the way it does in the tube. Major disappointment!
I know these colors aren't the normal, daily wearable, safe for work kind of colors. But for those of you (like me) who have seen pictures of people wearing similar colors but don't want to spend upwards of $15 a tube...these are a good alternative. If you're going to buy them, definitely use the coupon code! Either that...or wait until they finally roll in to a store near you. I know Ulta puts NYX on sale like every other day, so you're bound to get a good deal if you stalk your local store. Don't forget to watch the video, because I include a couple of tips in there for the colors that were too light for me on how to make them wearable.
